Shao-Lin Kempo
The Original Mixed Martial Art

The art of Shao-Lin Kempo is a traditional form of martial art that traces its origins back to the Shao-Lin temple in ancient China. From its origins there as Kung Fu the art then moved into Japan taking on many aspects of traditional Karate before being brought to America and finally evolving into the art that it is today. The distinguishing characteristics of Kempo are found in the specifics of the stand up, which is to say the style of punches, kicks, and stances. The types of strikes and stances as well as the emphasis on balance and practical application of techniques is what gives Kempo its unique style and sets it apart from other forms of martial arts such as Aikido and Tae Kwon Do. Incorporated into this foundation of “on the feet defense” is a system of ground defense designed to prepare the student for the almost inevitable eventuality of falling down in a fight. Add into this the traditional weapons training and defense against modern weapon attacks and you begin to see why Kempo is such a well rounded art. When taking into consideration the many different aspects of defense incorporated into the art of Kempo it is easy to see why Kempo is today considered to be one of the best arts for self defense.

Check out our History page for a little more on the history of this great art.
Who Is Kempo Today?

Today, the art of Kempo is practiced by people from every walk of life. It is taught throughout this country and the world by many quality instructors. The curriculum may differ from system to system and the techniques sometimes experience minor changes themselves but the art as a whole has remained uniform through the years and today is one of America’s favorite martial arts.

Jiu Jitsu

Picture
JIu Jitsu is a form of martial art dealing primarily with ground fighting or wrestling. Incorporated into the art are a healthy amount of movements designed to take an opponent from his feet to the ground, escape an opponent who is trying to keep you on the ground, and defend ones self from grabs and punches while standing.
We work in close connection with Michael Selin of Ecole de Budo Raji, located in St. Johns, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Tim Cartmell to provide top quality Jiu Jitsu instruction in an amazingly open and fun environment. We follow the curriculum of Tim Cartmell of Ace Jiu Jitsu to rank our students in BJJ.

Kickboxing

Kickboxing is today one of the most basic forms of
self defense. It utilizes very few movements to effect maximum defense and power. This art takes only a handful of strikes, kicks, and covering blocks and drills them repeatedly till the movements become second nature. Many movements from kickboxing have been incorporated into the Kempo classes to improve the beginning students overall defensibility.
Our kickboxing program is growing quite quickly; look for more group classes to be added to the schedule soon!
